2-1-OresteLa Passione di Cristo è un ciclo di opere create da Fernando Botero tra il 2010 e il 2011. Il ciclo, che comprende ventisette pitture a olio e trentaquattro opere su carta e che è stato mostrato in numerosi paesi del continente americano e in Europa, manifesta un tema che è stato un tratto dell’opera di Botero sin dalla sua infanzia e dalla prima giovinezza in Colombia, un mondo ricco di immagini religiose sia in ambito pubblico che privato.

Il lavoro di Fernando Botero offre diversi livelli di interpretazione. Il suo lavoro offre sempre un’esperienza espansiva – mai una rivisitazione puramente imitativa – dell’arte di alcuni dei protagonisti della storia dell’arte occidentale come Paolo Uccello, Peter Paul Rubens, Diego Velázquez, Paul Cézanne e Pablo Picasso, per citarne solo alcuni.

Botero ha sempre costruito mondi sensuali popolati da esseri colmi di immenso piacere e felicità, attraverso l’abbondanza tranquilla e sontuosa delle forme maturate alla fine degli anni ’70. Quello che vediamo qui è un bivio dove ricordi della sua città, della sua patria, sono fortemente incrociati da forme di culto profondamente radicate nella sua cultura e nella sua iconografia. Le caratteristiche morbide, le idee e le forme, che sembrano così stabili, sono attraversate da questo sconvolgimento in cui il dolore e la tragedia prendono forma, adottando il linguaggio figurativo che è un segno distintivo del lavoro dell’artista colombiano, senza tuttavia abbandonare il suo unico sguardo distorsivo.

Dovremmo considerare queste opere, in cui il dramma si spinge ora dentro l’immagine, come una nuova manifestazione in cui si possono identificare trasformazioni interne, che arricchiscono e ampliano il suo lavoro. Qui l’ironia è sostituita dalla compassione, una riflessione sulla poesia e sulla tragedia, sull’intensità e la crudeltà della Passione di Cristo.
Questa mostra è stata organizzata nel cuore di Medellin, la città in cui Botero è nato, durante la Settimana Santa del 2012, in occasione dei festeggiamenti per celebrare il suo ottantesimo compleanno. Il pittore poi ha deciso di donare il ciclo al Museo de Antioquia, che da allora ne ha organizzato il suo tour mondiale.

Making Of “Botero – Via Crucis”












Viacrucis: The Passion of Christ is a series of paintings by Fernando Botero. In keeping with his renowned approach, this time he integrates the tradition of Western history of art with contemporary elements, focusing on the history of religious art to refer to the human condition, pain, injustice and suffering in the world today.
The series was donated to the Museo de Antioquia by the artist in celebration of his 80th birthday, celebrated in his city of birth, Medellín. This donation has allowed the Museum to become the largest possessor of works by Fernando Botero in the world, whilst also becoming a reference point for the research of his art, thanks to the museum’s documentation archive.
Within the salient features of the series, the viewer will find the same great skill as always found in the artists’ works of art, especially the handling of composition and colors. However, without a doubt his palette becomes more vivacious and overwhelming through the contrast between these paintings and the customary darkness in the treatment of the subject the suffering of Christ. Once again references to masterpieces of universal art and his own works appear, as well as the combination of historic and modern characters, and the mixture of scenarios from the past within contemporary spaces.
Nevertheless, beyond the many observations that can be highlighted in the pictorial plane, Viacrucis: The Passion of Christ is a series of paintings and drawings that challenge the viewers to experience an emotive involvement by inviting them to visit the gallery.
